Save Money With Shopping Lists

By Robert H. Cwik
Have you ever found yourself coming back home after shopping with bags full of things you didn't really need? Have you ever found yourself wandering around the supermarket, thinking what you need to buy and what you still have in your cupboards, fridge, and freezer? If yes, and I bet this happens to everybody, then you need to start shopping with a shopping list.

No matter if you do your shopping every day, every other day or once a week, a shopping list can help you save both time and money. If you do your shopping always at the same place, you can save even more time. No more thoughtless wandering among the shelves, trying to figure out what else you need. You'll just go from one shelf to another, grab what you need in the quantities you need, a proceed straight to the cash register in a fraction of time it takes you now.

A good shopping list is not just a piece of paper where you scribble what you need to buy. It is a list which tells you exactly what you need and how much of it. Before you can make such a list, however, you must know exactly what you have in your cupboards and what you will need in the coming week. This is where menu planning also comes in handy, as it will help you to plan your shopping both according to what you will need and to what you already have.

You should also order your list according to the shelf life of the products you need to buy. The first sectios should contain products with long shelf life, like canned foods, rice, pasta, beverages, and flour for example. You can buy more of them at once and then just resupply as needed. The next section of the list can include meat, if you have a freezer. Before freezing, you can divide the meat into portions you'll use for one dinner. You'll include fruits and vegetables in the third section, followed by dairy products in the fourth, and the products you have to buy more often, like bread, milk, or ham in the last one. Of course, you can change the order on the list, having products groupped together, you won't have to visit the same part of the supermarket more than once.

Finally, you will come back home with bags full of things you really need. You won't spend money on products you already have at home, and you will spend much less time shopping than without a list.
